I started replaying SR2:Reboot again (for the Nth time) a few nights ago and am compiling info on the game. For some reason, it honestly never occured to me to simply wipe out the Rangers so the war with the Dominators would take longer. I was always so frustrated when the game would end and my wonderfully and heinously armored ship I had spent a week putting together would just go "Frrrp" like a stale fart into the game's history. Now I can give the Dominators the edge they need to keep the war strong and keep me rolling in their parts and wires.

Thanks!

Hi,
I really loved your Alice and Kev story. If you don't mind. Will you please make another? Or at least share some of your wonderful ideas?

Thanks, Jon.

The next build might help a little with the framerate. I've identified that a massive animated hypnotic spiral texture does actually have a detrimental effect on performance, which was a sad discovery.

Thanks for organising these uni gamejams as well, and for generally being encouraging.

Glad to see you're getting a lot out of these things Robin - I loved Destroy the Brain (though it chugs a little on my laptop), and really enjoyed seeing the game develop over the 24 hours.

For what it's worth I've been hugely impressed by the progress you made between the first uni jam and the last. I'm definitely excited to see what you come up with at the next one!

Yeah, some character development would have been nice. However, there are bonus missions that tell the story of your predecessor and even some info about the jackal. That gives some insight. Albeit not very much.

I'm not making any complaint about there being a game about being a villain. As I said in the piece, that can be enjoyable.

The issue was that the game used a blank slate protagonist to let the player insert themselves into the story, but the story wasn't about the player, it was about this specific mercenary that is never introduced to us, and that we never learn anything about the motivations of.

So we have me, inserted into this war-torn country, made emotionally involved with it by the opening sequence, and then forced to make decisions that I strongly opposed.

But I'm not even proposing a solution at this point, because the only way to solve this issue while preserving the immersion and emotional investment that created it that I can see would be to expand the game to include the choices I wanted to make.

Whereas the more common approach would be to simply have the character speak, explain their motivation in cutscenes, and generally make the game into a generic game with an average videogame's crappy story that I would probably have felt nothing for, and certainly not have been inspired to write about.

What there is of Far Cry 2 is still infinitely better than the way the majority of games handle this stuff.

What a pussy! You Brits really are ninnies, huh? I mean, of course the game makes you do evil things! That's the beauty of video games, you can do all the things you never could in real life: go to an alien world, have super-powers or even insinuate a war in some remote country you've never heard of. And besides, you're probably one of those fools who judge the ones who don't help the less fortunate and think that that is doing your part. Or maybe I'm just the opposite of you. You see, there are two kinds of people in this world: creators and destroyers. The gaming industry has to cater to the bad guys, too. Just because you might be a goodie-two-shoes doesn't mean we all have to be!
